Some of This, Some of That Week 38

Well I used 2 yards to make another B3Quilt.
This is a Moda pattern from their Go Big Block 2 booklet.  Measures 32" square - just right for a preemie quilt.  It went together fast although I didn't do it in rows as they suggested.  I made the 5 nine-patch blocks that form an "x" in the middle of the quilt and then made the triangles in the center of the edges.

I liked the pattern so much that I decided to make the Raffle quilt for the Friends of the Library using this pattern to make a album quilt that will be raffled off Oct-December.
That's what's on my design wall barely.  It's too big - LOL.  Will measure 58" square.  The very center block will have the family's name in the center.  My daugher does great calligraphy and I'm going to ask her to write it in for us.  But first we have to have a winner.   Will take 3.75 yards from my stash.

Lastly, I've been going through my stash seeing if I can find fabrics to go with my RSC 2015 orange blocks.  These are the ones I've picked so far.  What do you think?  Please advise.  If I use all these it will be another 1/2 yard from my stash as most of this is from the St. Anne's stash.  This baby quilt will go to them.  It's going to be a simple quilt as I want to highlight the stars.  So for my stash report I can say I'll have used 6.25 yards this past week for a YTD total of 81.20 yards  de-stashed.

Slow stitching wise I have one more basket to do, and I will really start those leaves -lol.  If only I'd stop finding things I have to do, I might make some progress on those WIPs.

Stash/Design Wall Post/Applique Too!

I used a 1/2 yard from my stash to whip this charity top together.  I used a modified tube technique for it:
This top took about an hour and is for my St Ann's charity group.  Numbers on the sidebar for my stash report.

I added another row of appliqued circles to my Happy Scrappy Orphan block quilt.  Need to work on this more as I'm getting behind, but what else is new?

And in the mail:
I got my huge box of Goodies from winning Rhonda's giveaway!  So many goodies! Just wanted to say a big thank you to Rhonda at Ravelly 1 for this. More on this later.

I'm linking to Judy's Patchwork Times, Lyn's BOMs Away, Connie's Linky Party Tuesday and Esther's WOW as I have done some applique. Phew - now off for two days of fun with my cousins and Mom in Temecula. See you for Hexie Weekend which is still open til Monday, midnight.

Wow, a Stash and Design Wall Monday Report

First a stash report for week 3.  I used .25 yard of fabric to bind the UFO I finished.  I'll post it Friday. Then I used .26 yard to line a happy bag.  You can see the pattern here.  It is the first link on the page.  It only takes an hour to make one of these. I pulled a half yard of yellow dyed fabric for my Soupcon QAL. I also pulled some fabric to donate to my guild - 11 yards worth.  So here are my numbers:

Out this week:    1.01 yards;   YTD:       4.45 yards
Donated:          11.00 yards;     YTD:   11.00 yards
In this week:       0.00 yards;     YTD:     0.00 yards

Total YTD used                                   15.45 yards

I'll link to Judy's Stash Report and tomorrow I'll add some more to this post.

On my design wall are two sets of blocks I'm working on.  The first set is for the Garden Gate BOM I'm working on.

We were asked to make four these blocks - they're 12 1/2" blocks. The next block will be applique/embroidery. I say we as my friend, Deanna, and I are collaborating on a quilt again.  Here's the last one we made together.
She's making the machine embroidered blocks again and I'm piecing it.

My second set of blocks on my design wall are for a charity quilt:
The blocks come out to 21" and will be used in a disappearing nine-patch.

Lots of luscious eye candy there. Thanks for stoppping by!

Applique Tuesday

I'm quilting my quiltlet.  I'm entering it in the Steal Game at Guild tomorrow, so I have to finish it tonight.  It's from a wall hanging in Quiltmaker, Nov/Dec 13 issue.  I just resized it and made it fit the around 12"  needed for the piece. It has applique and piecing - my favorite combo.
I'll post a finished photo Friday.  What are you up to?  Would love to see your eye candy. Linky  below.

Wow, another Applique Tuesday and a Giveaway

Here's my LE a little more done.  I have finally accepted that the only way I will ever be able to move along on this wonderful quilt is to do it by the raw edge applique method.  With the babysitting and house, husband, volunteering,  and other commitments, I am falling further behind each day.  Still to finish part 2 and we are at part 4.  I had thought all along as I first read about this quilt that broderie perse played a role in it,  and so I will be doing that method of adding elements as I find some that suit. Thus the little pansies I found in place of the circle flowers that are in the pattern.  Now for the star flowers, then the zigzag borders.  I've made one star flower as a test.  A couple of things I've learned.  I will need to double the fabric for the yellow centers so that the petals don't show under them. Also I'm leaning toward using only one template for the petals as some are long or skinnier than the others.  Something to think about. Again this looks darker that it is because I took the photo at night.

Now for the giveaway - here's a piecing book for twister quilts I found as I dug around my boxes. Who wants it?  Leave me a comment for a chance to win.  Link up anything you are working on or worked on for another chance.  Giveaway ends Monday, midnight.  Good luck and thanks for the eye candy! Linky below.

Applique Tuesday

Now that little Alan is down for a nap (he's here for the day), I can upload my applique post.  I've made some progress on LE - added 6 more pie shapes, but thought I'd share another bit of applique I started three weeks ago. Our guild had a workshop given by Anelie Belden on Dresden blocks - a new way to do them.  I followed her method and was happy with my easy to piece block.
There were 16 of us in the class and all the blocks made were beautiful using different fabrics. I machine quilted the block  and in the process machine appliqued the points.  I'm considering using the block to make a bag.

What are you up to this day?  Would love to see your eye candy - applique or not - new or old or a pattern you've bought.  Linky below. I'm linking to Connie's Linky Tuesday and Esther's WOW.

Applique Tuesday

The temperature is getting to me.  The last 4 days it has been hot - which would not be a problem, but the humidity has been from 47- 60 percent.  This is a major change when the average is more like 30 percent for us.  I'm feeling nauseous during all the mid day times and it ain't fun.  And further down this week it's suppose to be hotter still (it hasn't helped since our tropical storm which dropped over 2 inches in 2 hours) later this week. So I haven't done much.

I did work a bit on my LE.
The camera doesn't give a good photo of this.  The leaves around the compass are really a nice dark green - and what you see as blue in the compass is really teal.  Even the pie shapes are not as dark as they look.  I'll have to find the manual and see what I can do about the photos my camera takes.  Thanks to all who commented on my two versions.  I decided to go with Version 2 and I am machine appliqueing those pies.

Would so love to see what you're up to - applique or otherwise, new, old or dreaming.  Linky below.

Wow, Design Wall Monday and more.

First, if you're looking for the craft class giveaway, go here. Ends Monday Noon.

Last week I used .75 yards to repair a lounge chair cover. The yardage came right out of my stash. That and the bits and pieces I culled for Esther's quilt (too little to count) was all the stash busting I did.  My numbers are
in 0.0 yds.; out .75 yds.
Stash in YTD: in 8.5 yds., out 95.18yds.
Donated YTD: 41.96 yds
Net for 2013: out 86.68 yds

On my design wall is my LE (Love Entwined) applique quilt.  I'm behind but some are just starting. We decided this isn't going to be a race. Actually, being a bit behind is proving to be beneficial because I am learning so much from what the ladies ahead of us are doing.

As you can see I finished the stems and leaves (done by machine with edges turned under) and now starting the pie shaped sections that go around the circle.  I think I'll just make segments in different colors until I find  a combo I like. Last will be the flowers for the top of the stems.  While I was making the leaves Frank was shaking his head watching me - they are a lot smaller than they look.  I'm so glad I saw that video about making the tiniest of applique pieces.  This project will be a long time on my design wall.

I'm linking to Judy's Design Wall at Patchwork Times, Lyn's BOMs Away, and Esther's Wow.  This will also serve as my applique for the week - it is very time intensive.  What's on your design wall?

Wow, A Design Wall and a Finish

I'm in the midst of finishing two baby quilts for twins, so won't get to post much this week.  Here's my Stash Report, DWM, WOW, Applique Tuesday, NewFO, and Lovely year of Finishes in one.

Stash Report - I was BAD.  I saw this wonderful fabric last Tuesday and ordered it before I even took a breath. And worse - I have no idea what I'll do with it (well actually I do and it will be my NewFO this month - a wall hanging designed using Judy Hopkins' method). I just wanted it - materialism at it worst.  I bought 2 yards from Fabricdepot.com  - it was on sale:

I also used 2 yards for the backs of those twins' quilts so my numbers stay the same.

On my design wall is my Love Entwined (LE) - My WoW and Applique Tuesday for this week:

The colors in the photo are way off - I need to read my manual again.  Those leaves are really a soft moss green (medium value) not black!  And the blue in the compass is not blue, but a nice teal. My compass is now appliqued to the background and I'm working on those leaves you see - seven more to go.  I've decided now that I've finished that compass, the rest of the elements will be machine appliqued - I just don't have the luxury of time to do it by hand. Some parts will still be by hand - like the tiny stems that come next - but for the most part it will be by machine.  LOL - then again there are so many tiny parts - it may be more by hand than I think.

My Lovely Finish for July is a cute I Spy House that Sophie picked for Block Lotto.  I'm so glad I include an easy finish each month!

Even if I don't win the blocks, think these houses would make a great calendar quilt. Thanks, Sophie!
Have a great week!  I hope to post again for Hexie Friday to take a break from all the mad quilting. Linky parties are underlined.

Here's the Linky for Applique Tuesday - would love to see any and all eye candy - doesn't have to be applique - but if it is all the better for us.

A Lovely Finish and WOW

I have a lovely finish of sorts. I made it my goal this month to finish all the blocks for my DGD's quilt, and I did! I even got it into the flimsy stage. I had my DH hold it so I could show it to you off my design "floor" - LOL.

So my new goal for the next month is to get it sandwiched, quilted and bound so I can give it to her. I spent three days at her house.  It was so fun, but exhausting.    Here's my three year old cherub:

I'm linking to a Lovey Year of Finishes - a motivating challenge. Join us. And I'm linking the Esther's WOW - too.  She's about to launch her new Applique Beauty!

WOW - my Tuesday WIP

I got the secret quilt back assembled, labeled, sandwiched and pin basted.  And that's all I can say.
Now back to my UFOs.  I'm linking to Connie's Free Motion by the River and Esther's WOW. Check out all those WIPs.

Wow - Fabric Tuesday

Happy to report I've finished my FMN morning glory block for now.
I fused and positioned the flower heads and embroidered the tendrils.  I've decided to save the rest of the thread work for when I quilt this.  Now to start the Crown of Thorns block.

I'm linking over to Connie's Linky Tuesday and Lyn's BOMs Away as this is a BOM block.  What are you working on?

Fabric Tuesday - Wow

Well the first row is quilted.  I will do the sashing between them and below the first row after I add the second row.  Here on the right, you see it pinned ready to be sewn.
Once that's done, I'll repin-baste the new row so that I don't have any wrinkles on the back.  It's back to the floor to do that.  I'll have to look into getting a table to do the basting as Cindy Needham recommends in her Craftsy class.

What's your fabric story - Wow this week?  I'm linking to Connie's Free Motion by the River and Esther's WOW.  See you there!

Another WOW!

I had 7 days of 4 grandkids in the last 9 days  - 3 of those 24/7! so this was the last thing I've done. Do go over the Esther's blog for this week's WOW and see the fabulous flower blocks she and others have made for the Forget Me Not BOM that is coming to a close.

PS: The telephone repairman said it was a wonder we had any telephone and internet service from the mess that was in the junction box. He worked two hours on it - even put a new wire from the pole to the house.  I do believe my NET is faster - woo hoo!

WIP Wednesday

This is as far as I got with the first kit for the new charity quilt:

The strips for the fifth row of fabric were missing from the kit, so I've set this aside until I can get replacements from the kit assembler.

In the meantime, I started on the second kit.
I just need the top finished and then I'll hold til January when our guild is having a Free Motion Quilting workshop and  the attendees will practice on the sandwiched tops.

What are you working on?  I'm linking over at Esther's WOW.  Go on over and see all the goodies!

Fabric Tuesday Wow

I've been working on quilting 20 squares in a 72 x 90 quilt for my daughter in law since January.  Participating in the 2012 FMQ Challenge and the FMQ Project has given me the patterns to use in the square.  Well, DDIL's birthday has come around and I finished it , handed it off to my Mom, she bound it and we gave it to her last Sunday.  This is the biggest quilt I've quilted on my domestic sewing machine.

Close-up of quilted squares

Thank you Leah Day, Becky Goldsmith and others for the inspiration to try this.

WIP Wednesday 8/29/12

My dear DIL (Deanna)'s mother, Barbara, has now been laid to rest.  Although Bobby had been in poor health, her sudden death August 19th was a shock for all of us.  She had lost her husband April 30th of this year, so you can understand how much sorrow has visited our extended family in such a short time.  Thank you for all your caring words and prayers.

This weekend I was able to get to a little quilting done.  I finished the quilt I was using as my FMQ pratice piece.  It is now with my mother who will bind it, so technically it is still a WIP.

Next , I made one of the local guild's BOM blocks.  This BOM is all about our city, Riverside.  Here is the Gage canal - a vital part of the local's economy:

Then I made a DJ block, Abbey's Eye, H-4 I believe.
Lastly, I worked on my craftsy sampler blocks (of which I am terribly behind).  These are June's:

I'm going to be seriously rethinking this project.  I find I'm not terribly keen on making samplers.  Maybe if I'd used the same fabric in each one, but so far, hmmmm.  Actually, I think it is because, other than my charity quilts, I'd rather be doing something with applique as my time is so limited now.

I'm linking to Esther's WOW Wednesday, and Lyn's BOMs Away.  I look forward to seeing what you're up to.

WIP Wednesday 7/31/12

Gosh, seven months of the year are over!  Time is just flying by.  Here is my second baby quilt flimsy of the four I have to make.
The twins are scheduled to be born sometime in September, so I decided to use fall prints.  I'll put some applique on it before sandwiching.  The flannel back has some cute pink hearts.  I'll have to make them slightly different so Mom can tell them apart.  They know already that they are fraternal twins.

I'm linking to Esther's WOW, and Barb's NewFO Challenge.  Go see the goodies.

WIP Wednesday 7/18/12

First baby flimsie done - 3 to go!  Yes, have 4 to make now.
Half way done with the next one.  Mom is here for two days so not much progress will be done.

I'm linking up with Esther's WOW .  Go on over and see all the goodies there.

WIP Wednesday 7/11/12

Made some progress on my 3rd VA quilt.  Am about 3/5ths done.  I call it my plaid quilt.

The picture is dark as I had to take it at night.  Does it look like a plaid to you.  I know, I know - crazy colors, but my husband likes it -so maybe some vet will like it also.

I'm linking to Esther's WOW on her blog.  What are you working on this wednesday?

Progrees is Made

Progress is made, at least some.  More blocks were added to the baby quilt I was working on (see previous post). More scraps were used. I...
