Design Wall Monday 10/8/12

This is a very busy week for me (and this always happens on the second week of the month!).  Two days of babysitting - two sets of DGKs, a funeral to go to, a St. Anne's Sewdality to plan for and moderate, a dental appointment and pulling books for a Saturday Sale and watching DGKs on Saturday, too!  So not much sewing will be done. So languishing all this week on my design wall unless I do some today is:
Do you recognize this , Bette?  I squared it up and added borders. Now just needs to be quilted.

Here's a few units I've fused together for the Forget Me Not block I'm working on. Does it look like a Hooded Warbler to you? - LOL.  I'm way behind!!  If life would slow down, I might get more applique done.

Now what's on your design wall?  I'm linking to Judy's Patchwork Times, Lyn's BOMs Away , and Esther's WOW - those are always fun.

Design Wall Monday 10/1/12

Up on my design wall is the start of another charity quilt.  This one is a flannel neonatal quilt for our local NIC-U.  Nine blocks to finish at 30"x 30".  That's the size they want.

What's up on your design wall?  I'm linking over to Judy's Patchwork Times, Lyn's BOMs Away, and  Quilt are for Giving blog.

Also my book giveaway is still going on.  Go to my last Applique Thursday post and comment or link to win!

Design Wall Monday 9/17/12

Up on my design wall is another Christmas Log Cabin block to make four done - not sewn together.  Not sure yet how I'm going to lay these. Only 21 to go:

First, Happy Labor Day!  Hope you are resting and doing something fun.

Secondly, my book giveaway is still going on. Go here to win this Terry Atkinson book.

Third, I made my first Stars and Stripes Sampler block as chosen by Judy:
You can go to Judy's blog to see her new project based on a Fons and Porter book.

Lastly here is the flimsy to my latest charity quilt.  I call it my "squarish I spy".  All from leftover 5"squares using a disappearing nine patch.

What's on your design wall?  You can see more of what quilters are up to at Judy's Patchwork Times.

Here's Hannah opening her package.
Coming off my design wall (maybe this should be a tuesday post?) is Hannah's quilt - the one whose label you saw yesterday.  The reddish blocks are way more pink than they look in this picture.  And I did take it outside, sighhh.  She picked the colors of pink, purple and blue.

She was very surprised to get a present at her twin sister's baby shower.  That's her mom on the left.  Hannah has been in a wheel chair all her life, but that doesn't stop her - she 's a cheerleader at her high school.

Next up on my design wall is a BOM block for our Guild's BOM.  I'm only three behind.

What's on your design wall?  I'm linking over at Judy's with all the others.

Design Wall Monday 8/13/12

2nd flimsie of three almost done and on my design wall.  The twins were born Friday - seven weeks early, although the doc is now saying the due date may have been 2 weeks earlier than thought.  Daniella and Lucia weighed in at 4 - 6 and 4-10 and are doing very well.  The pediatrician said they are healthy.  Mother doing fine.  Now I just have to finish the quilts by the 19th if only the weather and life let me work on them.

What 's on your design wall?  Go on over to Judy's Patchwork Times and see what others are doing.

Design Wall Monday 7/30/12

Coming off my design wall (and thank goodness the camera got the colors right) is my third Anna's Garden block.  I'm pretty pleased with it.  Wish I had time to start the fourth one, but will be packing and getting ready to leave for CO.  You know how that goes...

I'm linking to Judy's Patchwork Times and Lyn's  BOMs Away.  Don't forget to check out all of those goodies there.

Design Wall Monday 7/23/12

Here's that third block a little bit more along.  I wanted to do the hand because it took up so much of the block, but I forgot that there is a sequential order to developing an applique.  In order to set the hand I needed to add the branch that is under it.  And before the branch I had to have the leaves for the twigs to cover them, and before the leaves I needed another letter that goes under a leaf - in all I have nine pieces before I can sew on the hand. Maybe by Thursday, I'll have that piece in place to show. For now, it's that first baby quilt to finish for the shower on the 28th.  Not much time to get it done as it will be a week of chauffering, babysitting and going to the International Quilt Show in Long Beach on Friday.

What's on your design wall?  Go on over the Judy's beautifully redesigned blog, Patchwork Times, and Lyn's BOMs Away to see eye candy.  I look forward to seeing yours, too.

Design Wall Monday 7/16/12

Almost there!  I was hoping to have begun on my third Anna's Garden applique block, but not quite - one last row to go. They just need hand stitching and I can start on the next block. I wish I knew more about my camera - those flowers are actually pink, not peach - as in my stash report photo.  I'm thinking it's the lighting.  Actually, I'm surprised I got this far as last week was the busiest of each month.  Today starts summer camp for DGKs and friends, so there will be a lot of chauffering done.  What's on your design wall?

Design Wall Monday 7/9/12

There are two things new on my design wall.  I've been invited to two baby
showers - one in late July and one in the middle of Aug, so I have to drop everything and make three baby quilts.  Yes, one of them is having twins -both girls, and the other decided not to find out. I'll have to be creative and find something suitable for a boy or girl.  Of course I have to shop for these - LOL.  I just won't count as part of my stash as they are never even going to be part of it.  The fabric is going right from the store to the cutting table.  One mom really likes fall colors, so I got this cute collection call Ten Little Things by Jenn Ski for Moda.  I've decided to sash it in green. Hope she likes it. I love the cute little owls.

Secondly, I've finished my first Anna's Garden block and started prepping the second.  I'm hoping if I do a little each day, I'll be able to make a block a week -praying that's not too great a task.

I'm linking to Judy's Design Wall Monday and Lyn's BOMs Away!  Do check out all the eye candy there.

Made another log cabin block using my new tool , and made a prototype string block - I know I want to change it already.  Making these two at a time like leaders and enders:

This is just prepped.  And I need to add 5 circles (which I dread).  Hope to get rid of the rough edges around the curves as I needle turn this.  I think I'm going to make each block with a different applique technique and once and for all see which one I like (and likes me-LOL) as I make Anna's Garden.  The original was in reproduction fabrics, but I've decided to go a little brighter than that.  The central blocks are mostly 7" square finished.

My star is quilted.  Here is the front:

Here is the back.  Now to bind it.  Thank you, Judy for those lessons - don't know if I would have attempted feather quilting without them.  What's on your design wall? Go on over to Judy's http://www.patchworktimes.com/ to see how others are doing.  And you can see the feather video lessons and posts under the tab Tutorials.

Design Wall Monday 6/11/12

Okay!  New on my design wall are the four Jubilee Album Blocks.  Yeah!  Ready to start thinking about putting these together in a top.  The original quilt featured in the Fons and Porter magazine had 12 blocks.  I'm only doing the wall hanging version.  These blocks are 13 " square when finished.  Only the cherry block is squared up so far.  I've got to go stash dumping and find fabric for the borders.  They may be on the wall for a while.  I want to work on Esther's May block now.

Go on over to Judy's Design Wall Monday, and Lyn's BOMs Away  - oh and Esther's WOW, too -to see what others are up to.

Design Wall Monday 6/4/12

Nothing on my design wall although I have a lot of ufos and wips.  I'm greening some batts right now to go with the charity quilts and then they'll be ready for the 14th.  I was going to be quilting with Judy, but she is long arming her quilt in the free feather tutorials, but mine will be on a DSM and I need to start in the center.  So will have to wait until she gets there to continue on that project.

So what is greening a batt? It's my way of dealing with left over pieces of batting to use it up instead of throwing it away.  I learned this method from Marti Michell in her machine quilting in sections book. Way faster than basting the batting together.

Essentially, you find pieces that together will provide a batt for your top.  I overlap them at the side they will be joined and cut a squiggly line through both of them.  In the photo you can see them after the cut.  I threw away the two pieces resorting from cutting them.  Then I cut 1" strips of fusible interfacing.  I push the two pieces together and lay the strips on top of the edges and with a Teflon sheet or a piece of fabric I press the joint closed with the interfacing. (you can see a more detailed post here).  The batt is now ready to sandwich with the top and back.  Have one more to go after this one.

What are you up to?  Visit Judy at Patchwork Times and link up to let us know.

Design Wall Monday 5/28/12

Going off my design wall - I made this yesterday - is block 4 of our Guild's BOM for 2012.  Our BOM queen is doing a fabulous job of picking subjects and designing blocks for us to make. This one is of the Mission Inn, a National Historic Landmark.   I have to do a little stitch work on it and it will come off my design wall.  They use to have, for many years, two parrots - thus the fellow to the right.

What's on your design wall?  Leave me a comment below, and go on over to Judy's Patchwork Times design wall and see what others are doing.

Last, but not least visit Quilt Inspiration for the most wonderful flag quilt, perfect for Memorial Day.

After delivering some teeth (don't ask -lol), going to PT appointment, volunteering at Library, I finally had a few minutes to start on my Craftsy blocks for May.  Have two more strips to add to this one, but first I have to fold laundry.

What's on your design wall?  Go on over to Judy's Patchwork Times and check out all the lovelies there.

Had some left over tubes from making the two charity quilts for the teenagers from tube quilts, and here's how I utilized them for baby quilts - well at least one so far.  I love the border print - it is so cute!

DWM 4/30/12

The quilts on last week's design wall monday are still there, however I'm binding one and sandwiching the other.  I need to get these done by the 10th.  I quilted this one with a squiggly line instead of stitch in the ditch.  The packaging for the batting recommends that it be not quilted more than 4 inches apart.  Since these are 7 inch squares, we are going to tie them in the middle and they should be fine.

I'm linking this to Judy's Patchwork Times (on sidebar) and while I'm there I'll check out what others are doing.  You're invited, too.

Design Wall Monday 4/16/12

Here is a new project I started yesterday.  I can't show you much as it is a surprise for an online sister of a group I belong to.  It's not only a new project, but a new technique too.  Should be interesting.  It involves curves, but only straight stitching.  Oh, yes and a new notion - a ruler to be exact.  And yes, it is Christmas fabrics.

It's not to late to participate in my giveaway.  Ends Wednesday evening.  Click here to guess.

So what's on your design wall? I'm linking to Judy's Patchwork Times and Lynn's BOMs Away - both buttons on sidebar.  Go on over and see what everyone is doing, and add your linky so we can see what you are doing, too.

Progrees is Made

Progress is made, at least some.  More blocks were added to the baby quilt I was working on (see previous post). More scraps were used. I...
