Stash Report 9/30/12

Alan was over for the weekend, so no sewing got done. His brother, Will, came too.  Haven't heard from Cassandra - maybe she's away from the computer.  I'll give her a little bit more time before I draw again for the Miniature to Masterpiece book.  In the meantime, this week's book giveaway is on  - ends Wednesday evening. The book is called Woven  Quilted. Go here to read about it and enter.   My destashing this week worked out to a bit more than last week, LOL.  I made another VA quilt. That used up 2 yards.  I worked on several blocks and used up about a FQ.  Then I culled fabric with Alan's help and found 3 1/2 yards more for the Thrifty Corner. Here are my numbers:
Used/Donated last week:    5.5 yards
Used/Donated YTD:     144.69 yards
Added/Bought last week:    0.0 yards
Added/Bought YTD:       35.54 yards
------------------------------
Net Decrease YTD:     109.15 yards.

So how's your destashing going?   I'm linking over to Judy's Patchwork Times.  Be sure to visit to see what others have done.

Stash Report 9/2/12

First don't forget the book giveaway going on til Wednesday, midnight: click here.

Second, thanks to all who sent condolences. They are appreciated. Yesterday before I went off to help at Duarte, I spent a couple of hours straightening my sewing room to some degree. All items boxed and off the floor and for the most part somewhat organized. Nothing like the finality of death to make one realize we only have so much time, and limited sewing time at that - so time to get realistic of what one can accomplish.  So today I took one of those near 100 wips and made a potholder.

This was a leftover salvaged block from an old quilt bought at a yard sale and refurbished. Have one block left, so I'll probably make another potholder.  All I had to do was sandwich it with some thermadore(?) and another layer of batting, a backing and bind.

And thirdly, while organizing I culled 26 yards to donate to our guild's thrifty corner, and used a 1/4 yard on the two applique blocks I'm making.  Here are my numbers:
Used/Donated last week: 26.25 yards
Used/Donated YTD:    121.44 yards
Added/Bought last week: 0.0yards
Added/Bought YTD:    35.54 yards
------------------------------
Net Decrease YTD: 85.94yards     How are you doing? Head on over to Judy's Stash Report to see how others did.

Stash Report and FMQ Challenge

It's that time again to report how we've done on bustin' stash.  I actually have something to report!  I used a yard of stash for the backing of the third flimsie.  What with all the interruptions, changes in plans and babysitting, I'm not there with three quilts done for tomorrow's shower.  Sooooo, instead I worked on the one for the older sister.  I'll make a card with a picture of the other twoflimsies and give that to the mom.  The little babies won't be home for a while (seven weeks early) so I"ll have those done by then - 'sides it too hot for baby quilts other than sitting or lying on them - LOL.  Here are my numbers
Used/Donated last week: 1  yard
Used/Donated YTD: 95.19 yards
Added/Bought last week: 0.0yards
Added/Bought YTD: 35.5 yards
------------------------------
Net Decrease YTD: 59.69 yards   Now as to how I quilted this quilt.  I was going to do the 2012 FMQ Challenge piece for August. Wrong!  I just couldn't get the hang of it - I tried and tried.  I did pages of paper drawing to no avail.  The pattern, a jester's cap motif, just wouldn't materialize for me, sink into my psyche.  I think it was the going backwards that got to me.  My brain couldn't handle it.  Once in a while I got it, but then I'd quilt myself into corners or leave behind huge gaps, that I gave up.  So I did some doodling instead for this quilt.
You can click on the photos to enlarge if you want to.  I incorporated some leaves and her initials here and there.
When I did the border with FMQ, I had a space and decided to put my label there.
Here's how it looks in the border:

Again, the lighting was lousy, so you have to enlarge the photo to see how it fit between the two motifs.  I'm binding it now so it will be ready for tomorrow's shower.  SewCalGal, please count me out of the drawing for this month's prize.  I'll keep trying - maybe I'll get the hang of that jester hat.

How did you do with your destashing?

Stash Report 7/22/12 & Family

It's just as well Judy isn't having a report this week as I have nothing to report, again.  Oh, I'm sewing, and if I took the time to figure it, I may have used a 1/32nd of a yard in all the little pieces used for my third block of Anna's Garden, so essentially I'm where I was last week as far as destashing.  Almost done with the second flimsie  of the four baby quilts. Added a wrong size sashing (by 1/4" too wide) and had to almost take out a whole row to fix it.  So instead of fabric progress, here's some fun photos of two of my DGS.

I don't know what it is about this hat, but both Leo when he was here in 2010 and Alan, recently, both love it and wanted to wear it.
Here's Leo at about 21 months in 2010:

Here's Alan at 20 months, about a week ago:
Who's next?

Stash report 7/15/12

Working on the baby quilts and my applique so haven't used much of the stash except for a few scraps for the 2nd applique block

Good thing I'm ahead on my destashing goal for the year. Nothing in and a miniscule out, so essentially the total is the same as last week.  BTW:  today is the last day for you to win a 5" batik charm.  Go to my Applique Thursday post and see how you can be the lucky recepient. Closes at midnight.

I'm linking to Judy's Stash Report - go see how others are doing.

Stash Report 7/8/12

Got serious about destashing and attacked a box that has been so long in my way.  I put it in my way, so I'd do something with it.  Didn't work - has been in that spot almost a year, but finally I got to it, and I made 6 test string blocks from it.  You can read about it here  and here .  Oh, I did make a couple of charity quilts from this box when I first got it, but although they turned out 36" square, they used a miniscule amount of strings.  I swear they multiply at night!  As I rummaged I did find 1.35 yards to make a Christmas quilt - Woohoo, but the rest is going to be donated to another group that makes charity quilts, so there goes 6 yards of fabric in one copy paper box.  Here are my numbers:

Used/Donated last week:  7.35 yards
Used/Donated YTD:       94.19 yards
Added/Bought last week: 2.0 yards  batiks from a friend (not gift but purchase with batting)
Added/Bought YTD: 35.5 yards
------------------------------
Net Decrease YTD: 58.69 yards  Woohoo!  I'm ahead of my goal by almost seven yards.

Stash Report 7/1/12

I was busy last week but with actual quilting on my FMQ, hand appliqueing, and embroidery.  I did make 2 blocks - pulled a 1 1/4 yards for my Urban Nine Patch and a 1/4 yard for another Log Cabin block.

Here are my numbers:
Used/Donated last week: 1.5    yards
Used/Donated YTD:      86.84 yards
Added/Bought last week:   0.0 yards
Added/Bought YTD:        33.5 yards
------------------------------
Net Decrease YTD: 53.34 yards   Not bad for the start of the second half of the Stash Busting Year!

Stash Report and FMQ

Okay - some progress to report on two fronts.  First, I used a yard to back my carpenter star.  I used another yard to back my VA quilt.  Then I finished making those nine-patchers and cut up anothe 1.5 yards. Then I used a fat eighth of green for my Jacob's Ladder block for a total of 3.75 yards used this past week.
Here are my numbers:
Used/Donated last week: 3.75 yards
Used/Donated YTD: 70.98 yards
Added/Bought last week: 0.0 yards
Added/Bought YTD: 27.5 yards
------------------------------
Net Decrease YTD: 43.48 yards  Little more than 6 1/2 yards for me to meet my half year goal.  Yeah!

The second progress front was in my Learning to do Feathers by FMQ.  I'm half way done quilting my carpenter star as per Judy's fine instructions for FMQ feathers.  I first practiced on paper.  And for the life of me I couldn't get the left side of the feathers to look as they should.  So I decided to try them on the quilt top using freezer paper.  I found a feather I liked in Quiltmakers Quilt Motifs vol. 1 and traced it on the FP.  Then, since I could do the right side of the feather, I used only one side of the motif.  I ironed them on the diamond shape and off I went.  Don't look at my first ones, but by the 4th I was feeling better about them, and the last two came out okay. One of my problems was I kept getting loops in the top thread.  I changed the needle twice, rethreaded the thread, checked tension, checked bobbin - pulling my hair out!  Turns out it was the thread!  On to the feather wreaths - back to training wheels and used FP.  In keeping with the spirit of the lessons in FMQ, I decided to do the centers as fmq - first two - awful; last two - pretty good if I say so myself.
I've decided I'm not going to take all the loops out.  This will be a wall hanging and essentially it is a practice piece and I'm just learning to quilt this way, so it stays to remind me of what problems I can have.  Hey, it'll look a bit hairy on my wall.

Here's the back.

This patch is not black.  It is such a dark purple, my puny camera couldn't tell the difference.  One of my better feathers.  Phew now to finish it.

Stash Report 4/29/12 & FMQ Challenge

Started a landscape and used .25 yards, started my last Jubilee block for another .13 yards, made a charity top for the St. Anne's group using 1.03 yards, and bound one of the teenager's quilts for another .21 yards.  Here are my numbers:
Used/Donated this week: 1.67 yards
Used/Donated YTD:      59.23 yards
Added/Bought this week: 0.00 yards
Added/Bought YTD:      21.5 yards
------------------------------
Net Decrease YTD:       37.73  yards

And now for my FMQ Challenge.  I have to post this today as tomorrow will be busy.  One has to complete and post the FMQ project for the month before that month ends, so here goes.  Our teacher this time is Don Linn.  He does fabulous work.  His method for marking designs uses tulle, a hoop and pens with water soluble ink. The good thing about his method is you can make your own designs easily and enlarge them easily too!  I like that.  But I don't have tulle or hoop and I'm trying not to go to a quilt store or Jo-Ann's so I had to make do with freezer paper again.
I made an extra copy of the pattern and cut it out for the outline. Then taking the intact copy, I traced it onto a square of freezer paper and cut out the pattern.  You can see that I clipped the lines in the leaves and other parts leaving just a little bit attached so that I would have the least amount of paper to tear away.
I've positioned the outline paper on the sandwiched block.  This block is part of a large quilt already sandwiched and some of the blocks are already quilted.  I should have traced the block onto freezer paper.  That way I could have ironed this in place and I wouldn't have to worry about it moving.
Next, I laid the cut pattern in  the outline area.  Again, I learned that I should have numbered the leaves so that they would be easier to match.
Once in position (sort of), I started to iron down the pattern to the block.
Here it is with the outline copy removed and all ironed down.
Following Don's excellent order of sewing directions, I quilted the design.  It was a snap to remove the paper as there were so many places where I quilted next to the paper, not on it.  See a couple of dark sewing lines? That's where I sewed on the paper, right where the pencil line was and the lead transferred to the cloth - darn!
Okay, this is a big block.  How was I going to fill it?  Decided to try free motion echo quilting.
And here is my finished block.  I'm linking this post to the FMQ Challenge 2012.  You'll find that button on my sidebar also. Now off to start back basting my Jubilee album block.  What are you up to?

Stash Report 4/15/12

Here come the Roses - lots of blooms with this very cool weather for April - Yeah!
I made three blocks and used a half yard of fabric.  I sorted through my stash and found 3.75 yards I can give to St. Anne's for more baby quilts.  Here are my numbers:
Used/Donated this week: 4.25 yards
Used/Donated YTD: 53.05 yards
Added/Bought this week: 0.00 yards
Added/Bought YTD: 21.5 yards
--------------------------------
View from my kitchen window.
Net Used YTD: 31.55 yards

Stash Report 2/12/12

This week saw sewing most days, but not days I necessarily used stash fabric.  I bought 6 yards for a mystery BOM I am going to do (starts Feb 15th at Esther's blog - her link is on my sidebar under WIP Wednesdays), gave 2 yards to St. Anne's, made three blocks from BOMs, and .25 yards for binding of the charity quilt.  Here are my numbers:
Used/Donated this week: 2.50 yards
Used/Donated YTD: 18.6 yards
Added/Bought this week: 6.0 yards
Added/Bought YTD: 8.00 yards
--------------------------------
Net YTD: 10.6 yards

So I'm behind - my goal for 6 week was 12 yards.

Stash Report 2/5/12

Last week I made 3 blocks and used some scraps to work on my applique block for a total of .39 yards.  Then I pulled some pieces for another applique quilt I'm going to start for another 5.25 yards.  Here are my numbers:
Used/Donated this week: 5.64yards
Used/Donated YTD: 16.1 yards
Added/Bought this week: 0.0 yards
Added/Bought YTD: 2.00 yards
--------------------------------
Net YTD: 14.1 yards

Hop on over to Judy's Patchwork Times (see sidebar) and see how others are doing at busting their stashes.
And for eye candy, here's the carpet in the foyer of the Irvine Museum of Art.  Wouldn't it make a great modern quilt?

Stash Report 1/29/12

I finished the first Promises & Borders block, so I cut into the two yards I bought from Connecting Threads.  For me, when I cut into a fabric or remove it from my stash for a specific project I have started, it then counts as out of my stash and is fair game for stash reporting.  So there went 2 yards!  Then I started my 3rd block of my Jubilee Album quilt and made some Just Takes 2 blocks so there's another fat quarter. By the way:  you can still win a fat quarter for naming my block (ends Wednesday) - just need to come up with three words. (you can read the post here).  Oh, and I"m cutting a yard of flannel for my charity quilt, so there's another yard.  Here are my numbers:
Used/Donated this week: 3.25 yards
Used/Donated YTD:     10.46 yards
Added/Bought this week:  0.0 yards
Added/Bought YTD:      2.00 yards
--------------------------------
Net YTD                       8.46 yards

Okay, this is the fifth reporting Sunday.  But I'm thinking the first one really should have counted for 2011 since it was stuff we did that year.  So by my counting my total should be 8 yards to stay on track for my 100 yards used in December.  Therefore, I'm ahead of the game!

Go on over to Judy's Patchwork Times (see my sidebar) and see how others are doing.

Stash Report 1/22/12

Not much sewing or quilting done as I was poorly a few days - still a tiny bit under the weather. Used a fat quarter's worth of pieces to make two Just Take 2 blocks. Bought 2 yards of fabric from Connecting Thread for my Promises and Borders BOM. Used a yard for the back of a charity quilt. So here are my numbers:
Used/Donated this week: 1.25 yards
Used/Donated YTD: 7.21 yards
Added/Bought this week: 2.00 yards
Added/Bought YTD: 2.00 yards
--------------------------------
Net YTD 5.21 yards

So I'm behind already by a little more than a 3/4s of a yard. Could be worse. How are you doing? Go on over and see how others are doing at Judy's Patchwork Times. Her button is on my sidebar. Have a quilty week!

Stash Report 1/15/12

My first week was spent sick, but I did better using my stash that week than this one - drat!  Only used a 1/2 yard total to make 8 blocks and start another.  No wonder it is hard to use up stash.  So I'm about 1.5 yards behind in my per week usage. Happily there is always tomorrow.  Here are my numbers:
Used/Donated this week:   .50 yards

Used/Donated YTD:       5.96 yards
Added/Bought this week:  0.0 yards
Added/Bought YTD:        0.0 yards
--------------------------------
Net YTD 9.46 yards       5.96 yards

Well, actually, I'm only .04 yards from being at the goal to date - hadn't looked at it that way!  But I did order 2 yards for my Promises and Borders BOM, so I'll have to use extra fabric to stay on track.  How are you doing destashing?  Go on over to Judy's Patchwork Times button on my sidebar and see how others are doing.

Progrees is Made

Progress is made, at least some.  More blocks were added to the baby quilt I was working on (see previous post). More scraps were used. I...
