Some of This; Some of That 9/8/19

Doing some slow Sunday stitching prep work.
Got this block hand appliqued.  Front view:
Cut to size also.

Next block copied, templates cut, placement guide made.
First flower fabrics chosen and templates ironed on.  These still need to have edges turned under with starch.

And coming off my design wall:

What are you up to? Link parties linking to under tab by same name under header. Blessings!

Some of This; Some of That 7/28/19

Coming out of a funk and a very bad reaction to a Shingles shot.  Haven't used the stash much - just made a 9 x 12" block for .07 yd.  So YTD destashing is at 44.53 yards.  Hope I at least make it to half way to my goal by the end of summer.

15 minutes to Stitch in 2019 - I did get three days in this week.  Haven't a clue where I'm at really, so I'm going to guesstimate.
15 minute days/week = 3/7 days

15 minute days/July = 7/28 days

15 minute days/2019 = 139/208

Success rate = 67.00%
So my percentage has dropped way down in the last two months. But that's summer for you, and I've another month of it to go. I know already a week will be lost then - maybe this time I can take some hand work with me. Last time it just wasn't possible.

So here's the block I made:
Gwen Marston block representing Texas, c. 1996 seen in a Patchwork 1996 magazine issue.
And I'm hand stitching again:
Showing the back as you can see better how far I've gotten - just started the corner leaf.  Worked on it while watching Netflix's Another Life - too dark a Sci Fi for me.

I'm linking to Slow Sunday Stitching , 15 Minutes to Stitch 2019Finished or Not Friday , and Sunday Stash.  Lastly, I'm going to plug my daughter's mini quilt giveaway - it's on Instagram under #6miniquiltsin6months2019.  Post a mini you've made at the end of the month and you'll be eligible for a prize.  That's what my block was going to be, but decided to send it to someone instead. I'm making another mini - just have to bind it now.  Blessings!

Some of This; Some of That

I've been making string blocks, starting a new EPP, finished up an applique block, made a charity block for Covered in Love, and began quilting my UFO and a charity quilt - phew. So only have .53 yds to add to the stash report.  But I bagged yardage and scraps from my Sweet Land of Liberty that I no longer want. Found homespuns are so loosely woven, I don't care to work with them again.  I weighed them and the bag weighs 4.63 lbs or 74.08 ounces.  A one pound of fabric (average) weighs 3.5 ounces, so I'm giving away 21.17 yards.  Woohoo!  My new YTD destashing now stands at 27.15 yards.  And there's a space in my stash cleared away of all that fabric. Maybe I'll take some fabric out of a drawer.

Now for how I did in January with my 2019 UFO challenge. I'm happy to report I got my Jan-Feb UFO for the year sandwiched, and I am quilting it. I'm about 3/4ths done. Next is a whole lot of stippling and it will take a while.  I hope to have it done by my deadline of the end of February.  I've allotted myself 2 months for each project this year.

The second goal for January was to make my BOM block for my applique quilt.  That is done.
I am finally over the half way point making the applique blocks for this quilt - 10 to go.

Let's see, what else?
Made a mug rug as a gift,

Crocheted a baby washcloth

Finished adding the latest donut to my Bliss quilt,

and salvaged fussy cut fabric into a baby quilt top for St. Anne's.

And as to stitching time:
15 minutes stitching days/week = 7/7 days
15 minutes stitching days/Jan = 30/31 days
15 minutes stitching days/Feb = 2/2 days
15 minutes stitching days/2019 = 32/33 days
Success Rate = 96.96%

That's it for last month.  How did you do?  Leave me a comment and I'll come by and see your progress.  I'm linking to Sunday Stash15 minutes to Stitch 2019, and Oh, Scrap

Friday Finish

Sort of because it is a block - but what a block - applique without a pattern.  I'm doing the Sweet Land of Liberty with Humble Quilts.  The block is called for Lady Liberty.  We have to make our own pattern, so in looking around in the internet I found this lady on another SLOL  (You'll have to scroll down), and I liked it. Couldn't find who made it. The quilt was posted at Sweet P Quilts and Creations of a quilt she saw at quilt store.
She measures 8 1/2" by 14 1/2" and is the first block of the second row of this quilt. If you want to see the one in the original pattern go here.

I'm linking to Finish it Up Friday, Can I Get a Whoop, Whoop?, Finished or Not Friday, and several others. You can see them under my tab More.  Blessings on this Friday of the Octave of Easter!

Some of This, Some of That

De-stashed about a 1/4 yard with leaders and enders and hexagons.  Then another 1/2 yard used for the baby quilt in process. So my last stash report for 2016 is 56.38 yards used - more than half of my 100 yard goal for the year.  Let's see what I do in 2017.  I want to do better.

It's Jan 1st and Judy has pulled the first number in our UFO challenge.  It's #3.

Make more blocks of Anna's Garden by Lori Smith
Here are the six I have done.  I'm using the freezer paper and starch method and hand appliqueing them. In total, Anna's Garden has 25 appliqued blocks and 4 pieced ones.  With how busy my months are, I'll be happy to  add one to these. We'll see.  I'll post my progress below at the end of the month.  You can see the first list here.  The other five will be added soon for a total of 17 (for the 17 for 2017 - see sidebar).

For this Slow Sunday Stitching, I'm continuing with my curved hexagons.  Have the last 5 for this round prepped.  Just need to sit down and start stitching.  Hope you have some time to stitch today. Happy New Year.

Applique Tuesday Week 26!

Oh my - half of 2015 is nearly gone! Where does the time go?

I took my hexie flower I made with my cousins and turned it into a mug rug:
I machine appliqued it to a round of front, batting and back.  If I can find the thread, I'll quilt around the inner hexagon and up the side seams to make it more flower petal like.

Did you do any applique or work on some eye candy.  Let me know and I'll come by and take a gander and leave a comment.  Thanks for stopping by!

I'm linking to Connie's Linky Tuesday Party - see you there.

A Fun Way to Applique-- And a Giveaway!

I heard from Eric at Fons and Porter the other day about a new way - well, new way to me anyway - to learn about our quilting craft - Daily Craft TV.  Like Craftsy, The Quilt Show, and QNN, they offer class videos about quilting and crafting.  Many of these are taught by experts from leading craft magazines.  Now I can learn from books and photos, but I do a lot better with something new if I can watch someone and work along with them.  Watching a teaching video helps as it's the next best thing to being in an actual workshop or class. So when Eric offered to give me a free class to review - I jumped at the chance - especially as there were 37 quilting classes to choose from - and that was only for quilting - lots more for sewing, knitting, crocheting, scrapbooking and  papercraft.  And they were quite inexpensive compare to the other competition.

I wanted to learn a new applique technique, so I picked "Make an Applique Portrait of your Pet from a Photograph".  Here's the brief video summary of the class. PS: Takes a moment to come up.

I enjoyed the class and as Jodie said - it is easy and fun to make a fusible pet portrait.  What I found most interesting is Jodie made the process easy and without having to buy any special tools to make this portrait.  Also, she encourages one to use what is in our stash to make these quick quilts - I liked how she used prints to give the pets character and still be true to the photos.  I would have liked Jodie to have shown some photos that would not have worked for this project so we don't get in over our heads with pieces and also a little more on thread painting (To me, this part was sketchy, needed more on thread, etc), but overall this would be a class I would recommend to people who would like to try this method.  Her examples were fabulous!

I decided to review a class with you in mind, readers, For in doing so I get to give away one of  Daily Craft TV's offering - your choice.  To win this free class, please go to http://www.dailycrafttv.com/ and look around the website - then click on the tab of your favorite craft  and review their offerings.  Come back to my blog and tell me which class you'd like to take in a comment.  I'll pick a winner next Monday about this time.

Design Wall Monday 7/30/12

Coming off my design wall (and thank goodness the camera got the colors right) is my third Anna's Garden block.  I'm pretty pleased with it.  Wish I had time to start the fourth one, but will be packing and getting ready to leave for CO.  You know how that goes...

I'm linking to Judy's Patchwork Times and Lyn's  BOMs Away.  Don't forget to check out all of those goodies there.

Design Wall Monday 6/25/12

This is just prepped.  And I need to add 5 circles (which I dread).  Hope to get rid of the rough edges around the curves as I needle turn this.  I think I'm going to make each block with a different applique technique and once and for all see which one I like (and likes me-LOL) as I make Anna's Garden.  The original was in reproduction fabrics, but I've decided to go a little brighter than that.  The central blocks are mostly 7" square finished.

What's on your design wall?  Go on over to Judy's Patchwork Times, Lyn's BOMs Away, and check out the other postings.

New Definition for One

is Done.  I finally finished my first Jubilee Album block called Cherry Tree.  This is a Fons & Porter series quilt block from 2003.  They featured the quilt in the issues of that year.  This is the latest long term WIP I have started and hope to feature it in my WIP Wednesday posts just to keep me on track (in other words: keep working on it).  This block is hand appliqued using the back basting method I learned following Kay MacKensie's tutorial.  I'm going to try several methods in this quilt to learn more about applique.  The next one will be machine appliqued with back basting.

What are you working on?  To see more WIPs, go over to my left sidebar and click on Esther's WIPs on Wednesday button.  Enjoy!

Got a Ribbon

I entered a quilt in the Hemet Valley Quilter's Show last month Feb 12-13th. And surprise - I won a ribbon! My Oriental Spring won a 2nd place in Small Wall Hangings - Mixed. This is a quilt I made in 2000 that was a guild challenge. We got 5 fabrics and were told to do something Haiku and this is what I came up with. The background is machine pieced. The cherry blossoms are hand appliqued and the quilt is hand quilted. It measures 22 by 30.

Progrees is Made

Progress is made, at least some.  More blocks were added to the baby quilt I was working on (see previous post). More scraps were used. I...
