Old Habits Die Never

Grrrrrr.  I'm trying to do as Bonnie Hunter and have Leaders and Enders.  I'm finding I can't break my old habit of picking up the scissors and cutting that thread as soon as I've finished sewing. How do you do it?  I seem to remember to do a leader, but the enders part eludes me.  Here are the ones I made today, and there would be twice as many if I would only remember to do an ender!
How does she do it.  I want to save thread, too.  I measured and there is from 3 to 4 inches of it (twice) that's wasted.  That's 12 x 8 or 96 inches of thread into the trash.  I'm determined to get the hang of this.  Any suggestions?

  1. Once you get the hang of using the leader/enders, you will NEVER go back. lol Put your little scraps of fabric where your scissors usually sit so that you grab the leader/enders when you need them while setting scissors just a little farther away. Good Luck.

  2. I agree with Suzy. I have a stack of the leader and enders squares on the desk at all times. You just have to reach for the stack and not the scissors. Once you get in the habit, there's no going back!!

  3. I was going to say exactly what Suzy said! Put the scissors far, far away. Now I feel weird if I don't have that ender piece there. Keep at it, and pretty soon you'll wonder why you didn't start sooner. :)

  4. Heck -- maybe you should put the scissors on the ironing board across the room. Then when they aren't right at hand it will make you think why you left them there. Couple that with putting the enders where the scissors are should do the trick. I seldom use a leader unless there is nothing on the machine from my last sewing. I almost always use an ender. I have done lots of quilts that way including sewing blocks into rows. It wasn't my primary project but every time I finished sewing a batch of the primary project I sewed blocks together, and eventually even sewed the rows the same way. Good luck. The habit will come but it takes purposeful training!

  5. In addition to what the others have said, I would suggest that you have a project you really, really like all prepped next to the machine that is your designated leader/ender project. It is fun to see progress on it even as I am working on the main project.

All Comes to A Halt

Sighhhh....  While I was quilting I  ran my finger, somehow, under the needle. Went right through my left index fingernail right through to...
